His attendance at various schools in Texas and Oklahoma during the Great Depression; decision to join the Texas National Guard, 1940; basic cavalry training, Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, 1940; assignment as a clerk to the veterinary section; assignment to Fort Clark, Brackettville, Texas, February, 1941; return to Fort Bliss, 1941, for additional training; return to Fort Clark; shipment overseas to Noumea, New Caledonia, July 8, 1942; his transfer to the Medical Detachment as a clerk; various stories about his experiences in New Britain, New Guinea, and the Philippines; first-hand and second-hand accounts of combat at Aitape, New Guinea; tropical diseases, combat-related psychological problems; everyday camp life in the Southwest Pacific.
