BENNETT, Shoshana (b. 1954).
For the Postpartum Depression and Maternal Mental Health Oral History Project. Dr. Shoshana Bennett is a survivor of postpartum depression and anxiety, as well as a clinical psychologist focused on maternal mental health and maternal-infant attachment. In the 1987 she founded the support group/self-help group/advocacy group Postpartum Assistance for Mothers. Later she became a therapist and a leader in the development of postpartum depression-specific therapy. She has written a number of books, including Postpartum Depression for Dummies and Beyond the Blues. She was president of the postpartum organization Postpartum Support International (PSI). BERCHTOLD, Nancy (b. 1953).
For the Postpartum Depression and Maternal Mental Health Oral History Project. Nancy Berchtold experienced postpartum psychosis and postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter in 1983. In 1985 she founded Depression After Delivery (DAD), the first specifically postpartum support/self-help/advocacy group in the United States. The organization grew through the late 1980s and into the 1990s, and DAD chapters formed all around the country.
