Description

Kimble, Timothy. The Bolivar Oral History Project. Through his paternal line, Kimble is the great great grandson of blacksmith and freedman Thomas Cook Sr. and his wife, Lethia Perry. Cook’s blacksmith shop was the focus of an archeological excavation in 2021 (Bolivar Archeological Project). In this interview with the Bolivar Oral History Project, Kimble talks about growing up in an extended family household and how his elders served as important role models. Kimble spent most of his youth in Southeast Denton and reflects on how the community was close-knit. Kimble remembers how teachers and coaches mentored students, including him. He and his interviewer, Howard Clark, discuss racism, Southeast Denton during their youth, family holidays, and Kimble’s experiences in school and as a congregant of the Mt. Pilgrim C.M.E. Church. The interview covers how the neighborhood has changed over time and the challenges its residents currently face. The interview circles back to what Kimble valued about growing up in Southeast Denton and various notable residents. His interview concludes with Kimble’s thoughts on Black history.
