Service in the peacetime Army, 1933-36; civilian employment, 1936-43; decision to join the Marines, 1943; Officer Candidate School, Quantico, Virginia, 1945; assignment as a replacement to the 1st Marine Division on Okinawa, May, 1945; his combat experiences during the Okinawa Campaign; tactics used against Japanese holdouts; training for the invasion of the Japanese home islands; postwar occupation duty around Shanhaikuan-Tientsin, China, 1945; his discharge and return to the Federal Bureau of Prisons; his recall to active duty during the Korean War, August 31, 1950; rejoining his old outfit, the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, at Camp Pendleton, California; ground combat around Seoul, South Korea; his serious leg wound and evacuation; his receiving the Silver Star for gallantry; recuperation and permanent disability; release from active duty in 1951 and subsequent career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
